The Royal Stables

Back to tour

The “Marstall” is the only free-standing building of the large complex of the Potsdam City Palace that still exists in its original form today; its facade stretches more than one hundred meters along the street Breite Straße.

The building, which later served as Potsdam's royal stables, was built by an order of the Prince-Elector Frederick William in 1685. It first served as an orangery in which the court's southern European plants were housed during the winter; this is why it was originally called "Pomeranzenhaus" - the House of Bitter Oranges. The original design from that time can still be seen on the back side of the structure.
