City Palace/Landtag

Back to tour

Across from St Nicholas Church and the Old Town Hall was the old Potsdam City Palace. The Fortuna Portal constituted the northern access to the large inner courtyard of the palace. The original gate from 1701 was built to commemorate the coronation of Frederick I becoming "King in Prussia". The gold-plated sculpture of the Roman Goddess of Fate, Fortuna, on the cupola gave the portal its name.

It is believed that a castle for guarding the Havel River crossing existed here on the site of the Potsdam City Palace as early as a thousand years ago. From 1662 on, Frederick William, the Great Elector, had a three-story palace with three wings constructed.
