The Obelisk of the Neustädter Gate

Back to tour

Today, the main street Breite Straße is substantially longer than it was originally. During the 1960's, the northern part of the Neustädter Bay of the Havel River was filled in; thus Breite Straße could be lengthened westward to Zeppelinstraße. It previously ended where Schopenhauerstraße is located. At that point, there once was a city gate, the Neustädter Gate.
The gate itself was destroyed in World War II, and the few remaining elements had to give way to the widening of Breite Straße. One last remnant, however, can still be seen today: An obelisk not far from its original location on Breite Straße. Together with a second obelisk it once complemented the Neustädter Gate of 1772 which marked the boundary of the first city expansion toward the west.
