Nauen Gate

Back to tour

Aside from Jäger Gate and Brandenburg Gate, the impressive Nauen Gate is one of the three city gates still standing. It was built in 1755 under Frederick II. As can be seen by the name, a road to the town of Nauen north of Potsdam began here.

The Nauen Gate has a special place in architectural history: It is widely recognized as the oldest example of Neo-Gothic architecture on the European continent. With its round towers with merlons it is clearly different from all the other building projects of Frederick II and reminds one more of a medieval castle than a baroque palace. The Prussian king himself had the idea for the design of the Nauen Gate. It seems there were actual medieval gates in Brandenburg that served as inspiration, but also Neo-Gothic decorative buildings in the parks in England.
