Barracks for Married Soldiers (Hegelallee 33-35)

Back to tour

On Hegelallee, located in the north of Potsdam's inner city, Frederick II finished his military reconstruction projects. Street numbers 33 to 35 include a former barracks called "Kaserne für Beweibte" which was the name given to barracks for soldiers with families at the time.  Heinrich Ludwig Manger, an architect and chronicler reported that the six barracks in existence from the reign of Frederick William I were demolished and rebuilt in stone. "These were the last ones in the entire city that had not yet had their turn in being built anew," Manger wrote. The new complex was built to a height of only two stories with each containing eight rooms on the inside.
