Great Military Orphanage

Back to tour

The Military Orphanage can be seen on the immediate right of the obelisk of the former Neustädter Gate.
Following the model of the Francke Foundation in Halle on the Saale River, an organization Frederick William had personally visited, the first military orphanage in Potsdam was constructed beginning in 1722.  It was founded as a home for the care and training of the children of fallen, deceased or particularly poor soldiers; at first only boys were admitted, while later girls were admitted as well. Children and adolescents between 6 and 16 years of age were supposed to receive an education according to Christian values, first by going to school and then being trained in a profession.
