Am Neuen Markt 5

Back to tour

The Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio inspired Frederick II to build several structures in Potsdam. You are standing in front of one of these buildings here at Neuer Markt number 5. The house was completely destroyed during the war; the present structure adopted the original facade in abstract form which was the result of an architecture competition announced at the beginning of the new millenium.
Up until World War II the form of the house was clearly different from the otherwise comparatively more modest buildings around the square. In 1755 Johann Gottfried Büring built a structure modeled after a palazzo by Palladio in Vicenza erected 200 years earlier. The house with its splendid facade was owned by the widow of a horse servant of higher position.
