Am Bassin

Back to tour

In the area encompassing the Baroque city expansion, not far from the city square Platz der Einheit, we see the largest square in Potsdam: Bassinplatz. The peculiar name refers to a water basin or reservoir which could once be found in this location. The Bassinplatz is a former swampy area that was drained around 1737. The collection pool was here as well and served the Dutch Quarter with drainage through a complex system of water supply and removal. The basin was filled in about 130 years ago after its size had been continually reduced. The only thing left of the water basin is thus its name.
