Old Town Hall

Back to tour

Next to St Nicholas Church on the right we see the imposing Altes Rathaus, the Old Town Hall. After it had suffered major damage during World War II, it was rebuilt in the 1960's and used as a cultural center.

The municipal town hall had always been at this location but changed its form many times. It was repeatedly torn down and rebuilt according to the taste of the respective period in history. Frederick William I had a town hall built here as well; it was soon redone again under Frederick II and thus, in 1755, it became the fourth Potsdam town hall, built by Dutchman Jan Bouman. He was the architect who had constructed the Dutch Quarter in Potsdam and was later promoted to director of Berlin and Potsdam building projects.
