The old market constituted the center of historic Potsdam. It was once located right next to the Havel River crossing and an early castle. During the time of Frederick II the square was surrounded by numerous splendid buildings in the Italian style. They all suffered heavy damage during the bombing raid on Potsdam on April 14, 1945 and afterwards were either rebuilt or demolished.
