Cabinet House (Am Neuen Markt 1)
On our way back toward the Long Stables, on the east side of “Neuer Markt”, you will see a small palace: the so-called Cabinet House, today house number 1.
In the year 1753, Frederick II originally had a patrician domicile built for the family of the rural preacher Krumbholz. Elegantly divided, color-coordinated, and equipped with numerous highly ornate windows, it played an important role in the architectural development of the square. A pair of Hermes statues, called "Mohr” and “Mohrin", black man and black woman, supports the balcony above the opening to the courtyard.
Soon after construction was finished, the nephew and successor of Frederick II moved in. He had the reputation of having a lavish lifestyle and resided here until 1786 before he ascended the throne as Frederick William II. Not only his son, the later king Frederick William III was born here, but probably another famous person as well: Wilhelm von Humboldt, whose father served crown princess Elisabeth, Frederick William's first wife, as chamberlain.
