French Church

Back to tour

The French Church, another architectural highlight of Friederician Potsdam, is located between the Dutch and French Quarters southeast of the square Bassinplatz.

It is the only church paid for by King Frederick II out of his personal coffers. His architect was Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff and his builder Jan Bouman. The king and the architect were inspired by the Pantheon in Rome for the design of the church. A dome tops the oval central structure; a hall of columns is in the front, which is, in turn, topped by a gable. On both sides of the entrance you can see two sculptures: the personification of merciful goodness and the personification of hope; the interior, on the other hand, is designed with extreme simplicity according to the French Reformed tradition.
