Charlottenstraße, the west end

Back to tour

Charlottenstraße played an important role in the plans that Frederick I had for the renewal of the city.
During the reign of his father, the Soldier King Frederick William I, Potsdam had already experienced enormous population growth after being built as a garrison city. In addition, the king had expanded the city limits, and the newly constructed city wall now ran directly along Charlottenstraße. Potsdam was expanded again beginning in 1733. In order to gain space on the northern edge of the city, the city wall was demolished and rebuilt in the area of the current street Hegelallee.
